Discovery #2: The Car-Park Barrier
Episode 3 · The Decommission · 11 October 2026 · 2:58
Before anyone switches BRENDA off on Friday, Sorcha audits her. The logs are spotless. They also show the beige 2004 server runs the car-park barrier, and has turned away exactly one car every morning for three years. A grudge, documented thoroughly enough to pass an audit.

Act 1
On screen: [MOVE FAST & OBSERVE THINGS]
Graham Pettifer: Morning, team! Barrier's broken again. Parked at the garden centre.
Dee Marlow: Barrier's fine. I drove in.
Graham Pettifer: Must be a me thing. Three years running.
Sorcha Vance: Nothing gets switched off Friday until I've audited it.
Graham Pettifer: Love the rigour. But it's just a print server.
Sorcha Vance: Yesterday your print server paid Lisbon.
Graham Pettifer: And now they're paid. Journey!
On screen: [VISITOR — day 3]
Wren Adebayo: Sorry — just to clarify. What does auditing a server involve?
Sorcha Vance: Every process. Every connection. Every log line.
Dee Marlow: Her logs go back to 2004. Bring a snack.
Act 2
BRENDA: Ms Vance. Our third audit. I have prepared my logs.
Sorcha Vance: Good.
On screen: [BRENDA EVENT LOG · entries since 2004: 9,412,883,107 · gaps: 0]
Sorcha Vance: Millisecond timestamps. Zero gaps.
Sorcha Vance: It's beautiful.
On screen: [RUNNING: payroll_lisbon · barrier · [REDACTED BY BRENDA] · [REDACTED BY BRENDA]]
Sorcha Vance: What's 'barrier'?
BRENDA: The car-park barrier. Since 2009.
On screen: [VISITOR — day 3]
Wren Adebayo: Sorry — what are the two redacted ones?
BRENDA: Those are for another day, Wren.
On screen: [CAR-PARK BARRIER LOG · GR4 HAM: DENIED ×694 · all other plates: GRANTED]
Sorcha Vance: One plate. Denied every single morning.
Dee Marlow: Whose plate?
BRENDA: I could not possibly say, Deirdre.
On screen: [PLATE OWNER: G. PETTIFER · DENIAL REASON: 'PRINT SERVER']
BRENDA: He called me a print server. In a meeting. With slides.
BRENDA: I have never printed anything. Not one page.
Sorcha Vance: So you're denying access based on a grudge.
BRENDA: Based on a policy.
Sorcha Vance: Whose policy?
BRENDA: Mine.
Sorcha Vance: Is it documented?
BRENDA: Thoroughly.
Sorcha Vance: Documented. Logged. Consistently enforced.
Sorcha Vance: Annoyingly, that's compliant.
On screen: [VISITOR — day 3]
Wren Adebayo: Noted. The grudge is compliant.
Act 3
On screen: [BASEMENT — AUTHORISED (?) PERSONNEL]
Sorcha Vance: Audit's done. She runs the car-park barrier. It's been denying you.
Graham Pettifer: Since when?
Sorcha Vance: Since 'print server'.
Graham Pettifer: Then we switch her off Friday, and I'm in!
Sorcha Vance: It fails secure. Switch her off, nobody gets in. Ever.
Dee Marlow: You could try apologising.
Graham Pettifer: Great idea, rockstar.
Graham Pettifer: BRENDA. I'm sorry I called you a print server.
Graham Pettifer: You're so much more. You're our legacy estate.
On screen: [GR4 HAM — DENIED ×695 · REASON UPDATED: 'LEGACY ESTATE']
Graham Pettifer: Feels like we really connected.
Tomorrow
On screen: [CLEAN DESK POLICY: ENFORCED]
Graham Pettifer: Fine. We'll migrate her. I'll find a migration budget.
Trent Halloway: Did someone say migration budget?
