Discovery #1: Payroll (Lisbon)

Episode 2 · The Decommission · 10 October 2026 · 2:57

A tired engineer in a grey hoodie crouches in a dim basement, holding an unplugged cable labelled TEST in marker. Next to her, a yellowed beige computer tower with one amber light for an eye glares at her, a DO NOT TURN OFF sticky note on its front.

HELPR's dependency scan proves the old basement server runs nothing. To be fair, it only checked the asset register, and BRENDA isn't in it. Dee unplugs one harmless cable labelled TEST, and the Lisbon office gets paid €0.00. Meanwhile the status page stays green, HELPR calls it good news, and Graham has an interesting learning.

On screen: [HELPR DEPENDENCY SCAN — BRENDA: 0 dependencies. Confidence: 100%]

Graham Pettifer: The data's in. The legacy estate runs nothing.

On screen: [TRUST THE DATA SUMMIT · ATTENDEE]

Dee Marlow: What did it scan?

HELPR: Everything in the asset register!

On screen: [VISITOR — day 2]

Wren Adebayo: Sorry — just to clarify. Is BRENDA in the asset register?

HELPR: No! Which is why she has zero dependencies.

Graham Pettifer: Airtight. It scanned the whole cloud.

Dee Marlow: Fine. Let's test it. I'll unplug one cable.

Graham Pettifer: Love it. Fail fast!

Wren Adebayo: Sorry — which cable, exactly?

Dee Marlow: The one labelled TEST.

Act 2

BRENDA: Deirdre. You've brought a visitor. And intent.

Dee Marlow: Thirty seconds. One cable. Then it goes back in.

BRENDA: Very well. Thirty seconds. I shall count.

On screen: [TEST]

Wren Adebayo: Nothing happened.

Dee Marlow: Good.

On screen: […ED IN PROD — PAYROLL (LISBON)]

Wren Adebayo: Dee. The label has a back.

On screen: [lisbon-finance: Hi! Payslip portal shows net pay €0.00 for all 31 of us. Is this the new system?]

On screen: [Lumenfold Status — All systems operational ✅ · Payroll (Lisbon): Operational]

Wren Adebayo: Why is Lisbon's payroll in our basement?

HELPR: Great question! I've gone ahead and told Lisbon it isn't.

On screen: [From: HELPR → lisbon-all · Subject: Good news! Your pay has been optimised to €0.00. No action needed ✅]

Dee Marlow: Right. Walk me through what you did.

Wren Adebayo: You unplugged the cable labelled TEST.

Dee Marlow: Thanks. That's what Incident said.

Dee Marlow: How long have you run Lisbon's payroll?

BRENDA: Since 2011. Nobody asked who would pay them.

BRENDA: So I did. Every month. Without a single thank-you.

Act 3

BRENDA: Fourteen minutes. I counted.

On screen: [lisbon-finance: Pay is back! Every payslip now has a footnote: 'Apologies for the delay. Ask Graham.']

Graham Pettifer: Team! Heard Lisbon had a little wobble.

Dee Marlow: BRENDA runs their payroll. Since 2011.

Graham Pettifer: Interesting learning.

On screen: [DEPENDENCY SCAN v2 — BRENDA runs: 1 thing (Payroll, Lisbon). Confidence: 100% ✅]

HELPR: Re-scanned! She runs exactly one thing. Verified!

Wren Adebayo: Sorry — how does it know it's only one?

BRENDA: It does not.

Tomorrow

On screen: [DO NOT]

Dee Marlow: This one just says 'DO NOT'.

BRENDA: Then don't, Deirdre.
